Yakisoba
This is my quick and inexpensive version of a very popular Japanese dish.
Ingredients:
Ramen Noodles
Cabbage
Onions
Soy Sauce (I prefer Kikoman)
Bean Sprouts
Meat or Seafood
Sesame Oil
Directions: Brown meat in skillet, drain and set aside. Boil water and cook Ramen noodles. Just the noodles, don’t add ingredients. Drain and set aside. Add sesame oil to cover bottom of skillet and fry onions, cabbage and bean sprouts. (The bean sprouts can be left out if not available.) Stir briskly as if tossing a salad. As the cabbage and onions become cooked add the meat and noodles. Add Soy Sauce and packet/s of Ramen spices.
There are a myriad of concoctions you can add to either clean out the fridge or just for a new taste. I’ve used everything from steak or chicken to hot dogs, shrimp and even spam (yes, spam is a real food). If you are near an Asian food market you could get fresh Yakisoba noodles. They are somewhat expensive but they do add texture and quality to this dish.
To compliment your feast you could serve spring rolls, gyoza, ginger and bamboo. It’s just a really quick dish for one person or twenty thousand. Yes, I spent a weekend cooking that much for an Air Force air show. Can you say 6 food processors for onions, 6 more for cabbage and 5,000 pounds of onions? Woo Hoo!!! Personally, I’d advise anyone to start with a much smaller portion before serving to the masses!!!
If you can’t eat this with chopsticks you can’t have any because you
can’t eat this with a fork or spoon. It’s a rule!!! :-)
